THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR YOUR STEEL LABELLING

Which labelling solution suits your process?

We support you in selecting the right material, attachment method, temperature resistance and identification technology.

When labelling steel becomes a process risk

In the steel industry, industrial identification must withstand high temperatures, scale, oil, weathering and mechanical stress. At the same time, slabs, billets, coils, sheets and bundles must remain clearly identifiable throughout production and logistics.

S+P Samson develops robust labelling solutions for these conditions – tailored to the steel product, temperature, surface and process.

Labelling solutions in the steel industry

High-temperature labelling on hot steel

Label illegible at heat

PROBLEM

High surface temperatures cause standard labels to lose their adhesion, become damaged or no longer be reliably legible.

SOLUTION

Heat-resistant labelling for hot steel using GRAPHIPLAST® and GRAPHITHERM® is possible at temperatures of up to 1,200 °C, depending on the application.

Label on a rough and challenging steel surface

Labels do not adhere

PROBLEM

Oil, scale, rust, dust and rough surfaces hinder adhesion. Standard labels may come away or fail to adhere reliably even during application.

SOLUTION

The material and adhesive are selected to suit the surface, temperature and conditions. If reliable adhesion is not possible, hang tags or combination labels can be used.

Weather-resistant steel labelling in outdoor storage

Labels in outdoor storage

PROBLEM

Rain, frost, UV radiation and long storage periods put a strain on the adhesive, label material and print. Labels may come away, fade or become illegible.

SOLUTION

UV- and weather-resistant industrial labels ensure long-term legibility of markings on steel products in outdoor areas and open-air storage.

Tear-resistant hang tag during crane transport and loading

Labels tear off

PROBLEM

Crane transport, bundling, handling and loading place heavy strain on hang tags. If the label tears off, the unambiguous allocation of material, batch or order may be lost.

SOLUTION

Tear-resistant label materials for demanding handling, transport and industrial logistics of steel bundles, wire rod and other steel products..

Material + product identification in the steel production process

From hot semi-finished products to the finished steel product, the temperature, shape and stress levels change. slabs are further processed into flat products such as strip, coils and sheets, whilst billets and blooms form the basis for steel bars, wire rod and other long products.

Material flow in the steel industry, from continuous casting through rolling to the finished steel product

The labelling must be appropriate for each stage of the process and ensure that material, batch and order remain clearly traceable even during cooling, rolling and material handling.

Barcodes or RFID in the steel industry?

Barcode
Optical codes enable the unique identification of product, batch and order data directly on the steel product.
This requires a label that is sufficiently visible and legible.

If a barcode becomes unreadable due to heat, abrasion, oil, dirt or UV exposure, reliable material identification is also compromised. Labelling materials, printing methods and positioning must therefore be tailored to the steel production process

RFID
RFID enables data capture without direct line of sight. As metal affects radio wave propagation, the data carriers, positioning and read range must be tailored to the specific application.
For suitable applications, flag labels, for example, can provide the necessary distance between the RFID inlay and the metal.

Combining barcodes and RFID
Depending on the process, both technologies can be combined: the barcode enables visible and targeted data capture, whilst RFID additionally supports automated or contactless reading processes.

Frequently asked questions about the labelling of steel products

Can labels adhere to oily or mill-scale-covered steel surfaces?

Yes, suitable industrial labels can also be used on slightly oily, rough or mill-scale-covered steel surfaces. However, reliable adhesion cannot be guaranteed under all conditions.

S+P Samson selects label materials and adhesives according to the specific surface characteristics and requirements of the steel production process. Where reliable adhesive bonding is not possible, hanging tags or combined labelling solutions may provide a suitable alternative.

Key technical factors:

  • Surface roughness and mill scale
  • Type and amount of oil, dust or surface residues
  • Surface temperature during label application
  • Adhesive properties and application pressure
  • Mechanical stresses and required service life

Which labels are suitable for steel identification?

There is no universally suitable labelling solution for steel identification. The selection depends on the type of steel product, its surface characteristics and the conditions encountered during production and logistics.

Depending on the application, self-adhesive labels, hanging tags or combined identification solutions may be considered. The key requirement is to assess the label material, attachment method and readability under actual operating conditions.

Key technical factors:

  • Steel product, e.g. coil, slab, tube or section
  • Surface condition and contamination
  • Temperature during labelling and subsequent processing
  • Exposure during handling, storage and outdoor conditions
  • Attachment method and required identification technology
Which labels are suitable for high temperatures in steel production?

S+P Samson offers specialised identification solutions for high-temperature processes in the steel industry. Depending on the application and identification system, thermal exposure of up to 1,200 °C may be possible.

However, the maximum temperature alone is not sufficient to determine suitability. The surface temperature during application, the duration of heat exposure and subsequent processing stages must also be taken into account. Therefore, a general temperature rating cannot be applied to all labels and applications.

Key technical factors:

  • Surface temperature during application
  • Maximum temperature and exposure duration
  • Radiant heat and temperature fluctuations
  • Surface condition and attachment method
  • Required readability after thermal exposure

How can steel coils and steel bundles be uniquely identified?

Steel coils and bundles can be uniquely identified by assigning an individual identification code to each physical unit. This code can be linked to production, batch and logistics data within an ERP, MES or warehouse management system.

The identification code can be presented in human-readable form or encoded in a barcode, QR code or RFID tag. It is essential that the identification remains attached and reliably readable throughout transport, storage and material handling.

Key technical factors:

  • Unique identification code for each coil or bundle
  • Integration with production and logistics data
  • Positioning and attachment of the identification label
  • Readability at designated scanning points
  • Exposure during handling and outdoor storage
Is it possible to colour-code steel using labels?

Yes. In addition to printed text, steel products can be marked using coloured labels or different coloured fields on the labels. This allows, for example, material groups, production statuses, batches or logistical allocations to be visually distinguished.

The suitable colour, material and method of attachment depend on temperature, surface, weather conditions and the specific process.

When should barcodes, QR codes or RFID be used for steel products?

Barcodes are suitable for the optical identification of steel products where a clear line of sight between the code and the scanning device can be maintained.

QR codes are particularly useful when identification needs to be combined with access to digital information or web-based content.

RFID enables contactless identification without direct line of sight and can support automated material flow processes. As metal can affect radio-frequency transmission, RFID labels and reading systems must be adapted to the metallic environment and tested under actual operating conditions.

Key technical factors:

  • Line-of-sight requirements and reading distance
  • Individual or simultaneous identification of multiple items
  • Metallic substrate and tag positioning
  • Contamination, temperature and mechanical stresses
  • Integration with scanners, RFID readers and IT systems
